This half-day course is focused on understanding social risk and the business case for stakeholder engagement, including developing the necessary stakeholder engagement strategies, policies and principles to move forward. It covers the fundamentals of stakeholder engagement for senior level management of organizations to take an informed approach to execute on engagement, consultation, and relationship building priorities.  

The objective of this course is to help oil and gas industry leaders and others who are accountable or responsible for managing and reporting on social risk to understand why it is important and how to manage it through an ESG lens. It will deliver insights to build a stakeholder relations management system that is embedded throughout operations.

  • Current/recent examples of social risk in the industry 

  • Political/regulatory trends driving increased focus on social risk 

  • Environmental, social and governance  (ESG) practices and reporting, including reducing risk and increasing business value, and integrating the S of ESG into business structures, tracking, and reporting  

  • Landowner rights/Indigenous rights holders 

2. Strategy Development 

  • Developing a strategic engagement framework 

  • Risk assessment  

  •  Developing meaningful, appropriate metrics and KPI’s 

  • Imbedding engagement into business practices and management frameworks   

3. Principles, Policies Development 

  • Developing policies to support engagement 

  • Principles of engagement: transparency, responsiveness, trust, etc. 

  • Adoption and demonstration of policies and principles throughout the organization  

4. Engagement Fundamentals 

  • Values-based engagement 

  • Identifying stakeholders and internal assessment

  • Balancing risks  

  • Engagement tracking and reporting
